What do you mean by what happened to it? The First Amendment exists, people can be religious if the way, its just that people who are in turn are considered "odd" or off kilter, or something must be missing from their lives, much the way that atheists are sometimes considered today.

(I imagine there would be poignant films about how something has gone wrong in someone's life and so they turned to some religion which only makes them worse and cut off those they care about waiting for their god to turn things around before finally realizing they need to do it themselves much like the entire "something horrible happens lose faith in god, something good happens regain it" drivel we see in this world)

I purposely left that blank and have no intention of answering that question.

I mean it'd be tactless to say that any reasonable could have happened event like a Christian and or Jewish 9/11 caused everyone to turn to atheism for example, tactless and I don't think honest.

There's just no turn of events that I could honestly see leading to this particular world. But I decided to study/examine it anyway...

Okay. I think without that bridge, it's hard for me to really grasp. I do think we have an inbuilt, biological tendency towards religiosity, so the lack of religion looms kind of large.
